Of Blood and Rain「SP404 - Dungeon Synth | Lo-fi Hip-hop | Black Metal」
Made August-September 2024 on the Roland sp-404 mk2 with heavy sampling of the Sonicware Liven Mega Synthesis and solos a little of the JD08 and vocals.
Atop an isolated castle, beneath a raging storm, a noble knight slays their rival. A lifelong history of torment and brutality ended by the blade as rain and blood mix in a grisly scene beneath the melancholy night. What should have been a moment of glory is tainted by the grave image of the rival's desolate corpse. A once feared and respected foe, they are reduced to a small, ravaged, lifeless husk. A face twisted in fear and resignation. A face that haunts the noble knight, lingering like a disease, spreading within. The knight graduall...

    Great piece! The dark and gloomy aura of Black Metal and the nostalgic and eerie touch of Dungeon Synth. Love the Artwork as well... the "Nekro" aesthetic works really well with the washed up pastels. Beautiful tale too. Sounds almost like the dark side of the old French "Amour Courtois" (Fin'Amor) set of values : Desire is greater than Pleasure. Longing for your Dream is more rewarding, spiritually, than the Pleasure of conquering it. Your knight feels the same, albeit towards his sworn enemy.

      @@Eddie_CYH thank you! Yeah no kidding, that's by far the synth from which I've gotten the most bang for my buck. I've used it on at least 30 tracks I've put up. As a work horse romplers and polyphonic sequencer, it's absolutely indispensable to me at this point. Paired with the sp404 those are my two desert island pieces of gear. That being said, I still find myself drawn to other gear for the tactility that the mc101 kinda lacks. But if I'm looking for a very specific sound, I feel like I can find it on this little box. I'm sure you've done this already, but I don't think it was available when I made this jam, please for the love of Sauron and all the children of Mordor, update to the latest firmware so you can fully edit the oscillators and establishment unlock all parameters for every voice. Man, this is so good. One of my favs I think. That instrumental intro leading up to the vocals was complex and interesting and atmospheric, then the vocals came in and kicked it up a notch. Love the lyric themes in the description. Also that transition riff at around 5:00 and then the spiral into madness the melody does after that, incredibly cool. And then we're back out in the rain and the hip hop, solo away your sorrows, knight! 😂 Also the atmosphere on the outro into that tape stop, chefs kiss.

    Gah, this is nice, I've just been using my Akai Force to run 8 synths bc i don't like their chop, but this makes me want to do some resampling again, Fing A man

    • @GeorgeL909
      @GeorgeL909 16 дней назад

      @@irradix213 thank you! The resampling on the 404 is what gives it its power, being able to endlessly bake in effects until the final sound is unrecognizable. I've been using the Liven Mega Synthesis a lot, and dry it sounds like a Sega Genesis, but with the resampling, baking in chorus, delay, distortion, reverb, it brings it to life way beyond chip tunes. Highly recommended. If you don't like the Force's chopping workflow, try to just record loops in like... 8-bar segments. That way you only really have to chop the end once per loop. On the 404 in this track I don't even bother chopping the end, I just place the loop on a pattern set to 8 bars and when I switch patterns it automatically cuts off perfectly. The only thing is the tail gets lost, but if I really want a tail, it's ready to add to the first step of the next pattern.

    This is probably my favorite album of yours yet, all the tracks here are so good. Compulsion (the song) might be my favorite, but I'm also very partial to that incredibly catchy, evil Donkey Kong Country ass main vibe of Are You Afraid Of Me. That melody sticks in my head for hours after. I listened to this on the hour long drive to the theatre to watch Alien: Romulus with friends. It was a lightning storm and torrential downpour and I feel like it really brought the whole "going to the movies in a storm to watch a sci fi horror" vibe perfectly. BTW, I really liked that movie if you haven't seen it yet. I'm not a hardcore Alien guy though so IDK if anyones freaking out about lore or any of that but as a person who likes Alien and things that are good, that was that. The visuals and sound and general tone of the movie was pretty much perfect to the originals I think. Anyway, congrats on the album release!

      @hexwavemusic thank you very kindly! I'm so glad that I managed to get a track to stick in your head! That's the best complement. Donkey Kong country vibe is frighteningly accurate. I am a huge alien guy. I have at least a half dozen tracks inspired by alien and one rap verse about Sigourney Weaver's butt, so I guess that makes me a true fan. I'm on media blackout on Alien Romulus, but going to watch it maybe this coming Sunday. I remember when I watched Prometheus, I was in New York, and my nerd ass was standing on a crowded sidewalk in Manhattan having a full volume argument with my friend about what the hell that movie was actually about. Like practically yelling in the streets like we were about to throw down, but really we were just passionate about the series. Oh man, this has a very dark and dancy vibe to it, nightmare techno is a perfect descriptor. I can feel that Labyrinth-inspiration, harsh morphing tones and unpredictable shifting rhythms. I'm into it a lot! I started playing the recently released "remaster" of Doom 1+2 with the new campaigns and listening to this while sprinting through that game and blasting demons would work very well I think :D I'm kinda in a pure 4 on the floor techno mood lately, both in making music and listening to random past artists I never heard of. I usually gravitate more towards electronica with unpredictable rhythms and such as both you and I often make, but it's quite fun and refreshing to make/listen to a straight up simple dance beat with crazy shit going over top. And with your brand of complex layered tracks it really gives a lot of ear candy to listen to while retaining that anchoring rhythm. Yeah this was good. And you know what, I was never a club person, but your description makes it sound kind of fun, if that's what's to be expected 🤔🤔🤔

I've definitely heard similar bands to them over the years, so there's no doubt I was influenced by the countless wax trax and ebm bands of the 90s. One other example, only a few months ago I was flipping through a RUclips playlist and I heard GGFH for the first time ever (specifically the album "disease") and I was like "wow it sounds like I've been ripping this band off for years" 🤣. 🔥 is this recorded live or you mixing down in a DAW?

    • @GeorgeL909
      @GeorgeL909 Месяц назад

      Thank you! The instrumental is recorded entirely from the sp404 played in pattern mode, manually changing patterns. I'll break it down for you. So, all drums were assembled on the sp404 using one shots and breakbeat chops played into pattern mode, then resampled with effects. All the basses, leads, pads and solos were sampled into pads on the sp404 from live playing using a keyboard attached to the JD08, but recorded in 8 bar segments. Then after effects were added, the drums and synth sounds were layered on top of each other in TR-rec mode in separate 8 bar patterns. Finally all those patterns were recorded in one sitting in sequence into a DAW by chaining the patterns manually. No stems, just one chunky wav file committed to audio. Only thing added after that is a little compression. But, the vocals were done all in the DAW over that wave file. That keeps this from being a "dawless" jam, but that's fine. It saves me a ton of headache trying to mess with vocal timing on the sp404. I suppose it's possible, but it saves me time to see the waveform over the whole song in the DAW. So it's neither truly live nor dawless, but some horrible abomination in between 😉

The chord melody is such a cool vibe and it is sparking some kind of nostalgia for me of something I can't remember 🤷 Really good vocals too. This spacey whispery transition at like 4 min or something is really something, the kinda distant drums going crazy as it builds into the harsh vocals, perfect. This is a very boring comment. Thank you extremely kindly! All your comments are fantastic! Ok so the chord melody struck my nostalgia gland too. My guess is unintentionally, it sounds like the Konami intro music. It's almost the same notes, I think. The synth is also similar, but Konami probably used vocal pcm samples, likely from the D50 or the Korg M1. There's a ton of cross pollination with these 90s digital synths. The JD-800 is a nostalgia factory, I'm pretty sure I heard it going off in Star Trek, the next generation the other day, I'm like "what was that sparkly sound??" I love those sounds very much cause they're all over the PlayStation and CD era game soundtracks. They usually used the JV-1080 or 2080, and the D50, and Spectrasonics sample packs during that era. I have been mining the sample packs, but I got the JD08 because it replicated the jd800 "close enough", and contains almost the same sounds as those other boxes. The big difference: the jd800 has a TON of sliders and physical controls, where the other three are all menu based digital VCR-like interfaces, especially the JV series, and only have mostly buttons. Like changing the settings on your old TV. It's no fun except for selecting a preset and running with it. The JD was in response to backlash people had where there like "why can't we have more controls like the old analog stuff, instead of these menus. I wanna make my own stuff! It's 1989 damnit, we should be able to have individual controls for the envelopes on this bitch." At least that's how I imagine it went down 😅. Anyways. Thank you again for listening. Then you can load them up with samples of the Alesis of literally hundreds of other drum machines, but still tweak and edit the individual hits... Especially with the sp404 mk2, which has an assortment of EQ, reverb, and compressors that really add a ton of character to the drums. These options run you $200-450 new depending. If you're really tight on a budget: koala sampler will give you most of the functionality of an sp404 without the hardware component on your phone or tablet, combined with a sample pack for old Alesis or Roland R8 samples, your basically set for drums. But the bloops were a mix of random 2600, Syntakt, and a combo of Relics and Fractal Bits softsynths, depending on what I was near at the time. I actually did a lot of the texture recording while watching shows. Me and the crew were watching breaking bad and better call Saul for the first time, so there were a LOT of episodes. Plenty of time to multitask and record bloops with headphones on. The 404 fx make them sound a little more spacious and stereo too. I also sample random things I find from movie clips and Internet stuff too. I know it's kinda naughty, but Idc that much. It's usually something random or obscure and hopefully transformative enough to not get scolded over. I sampled a random episode the TV show Charmed once I think. That's the one with Alyssa Milano? It had a built in synth called WASP which was actually modeled after the real life EDP WASP. I had no idea what that was at the time, but years later I learned it was a very edgy synth from the late 70s with some harsh and interesting tones that really colored my style of music going forward. • @GeorgeL909
      @GeorgeL909 Месяц назад

      Thank you! Each cover is a little different. I used to do a lot of photo collage stuff, mixing movie stills with drawn things. When stable diffusion and a.i. came out I started incorporating some of that into the artwork. Recently people expressed a bit of dislike for a.i. art, so I went back to some of the old ways of making the covers. This one in particular has 3 images: the background was a big cyclops octopus I drew with pen and paper, then I took a picture of it with an iPad and loaded that into Procreate. In Procreate, I traced over the image adding in shadows and shading and stuff. Then the final image went straight into GIMP and hit with a few "Posterize" filters and color reduction to give it a "clean" look. The second image was a hallway filled with water. It was actually a screenshot from a game on Steam called Pools. It's a weird little game about... Well... Pools. I took the screenshot, boosted the contrast all the way up and drew over it in Procreate. The little octopus monster in the back was drawn in just with procreate. The female figure was done the same way as the background octopus, but I had to use a stock photo reference to get the shadows right. It was a much bigger image originally so I could zoom in, and the poster filter did a lot of the work for me. In the the end everything was pasted together in GIMP and extra stuff like the texts, stickers, lines, and colors were added with just regular Photoshop style editing. I'm glad you liked the artwork, but it's never really been the focus of these tracks. I just like to put *something* to look at instead of a black screen while listening to the music. While some of my past artworks had a.i. elements, I don't think I'll be using any going forward. That means the track art will take a little longer to make, but it should still have the same effect.

      Thank you SO much man! I found I kept gravitating towards the Korg iM1 sounds in many of my previous tracks because of how deeply nostalgic they were to me and I thought "man I really wish there was a hardware M1 with knobs or sliders so I could edit the presets more easily." Turns out that basically was what the jd-800 was in the late 80s (more like a Roland D-50 with sliders). But since I don't have space and repair expertise to invest in a massive JD800 I got the boutique version, the JD-08 and I am in love with it, even with the tiny sliders. A lot of this track was just performing with the "classic" factory patches with tweaks, but the heavier parts had custom patches. I swear this synth must have been used in a ton of 90s PlayStation and computer games since I hear so many familiar sounds. Also I didn't record anything to midi in this track so it was all played in live chunks recorded into the 404 (except the chopped up drums obviously, this) which kicked my butt a little performance wise. Ok. That was me busting out the excitement for the new synth. So glad you liked it though.
